**this is an open story and anyone is welcome to post here**

The young man walked down the alley following a woman. He was completely soaked from wandering around in the rain.  His eyes were fixated on his data pad when a look of confusion filled face.  “How do you think we’ll ever find him? If the Machines can’t… what makes you think you can? He’s been missing for months. Maybe he doesn’t want to be found.  Maybe he’s ok and just hiding from this war. Even Zion reported him as deleted. How are you so certain he’s MIA?”

Slowly she turned her head to the left resting her chin on her shoulder. She was lost in a world that was her thoughts.  Her eyes drifted to a puddle between herself and the man questioning. Gazing into the puddle her eye rested on his boats.

She spoke quietly “Faith.”

“Faith.” he scoffed “I’ve never understood why people believe those silly myths.”

He shook his head in puzzlement. “They’re like an early form of the Matrix. I mean come on, nothing more then a way to control the masses.  If I didn’t owe you my life I wouldn’t be helping you, you know that right?”

Removing a data pad from her pocket she turned her attention to the display screen.  She entered a couple of commands and waited for its reply.

“Yeah” she paused for a moment. She thought back to how they had met. “You got lucky that day. But I told you then, we all have our own beliefs.  I have my reasons for believing what I do, and it’s up to you to find your own path. I do not want you helping me if you don’t want to. I must find him though. It’s not right for him to be...” She paused a moment at the thought of all the possibilities “Look, it’s just not right.  Zion thinks he’s deleted, Machines are glad he’s gone, and the Merv well.” In frustration she cleared her throat and paused a moment. “He is not gone though… I’ve seen his signal… Extremely weak mind you, but it is there… he’s still in the system somewhere. I know it.” Her gaze returned to the data pad as she shook her head.

With a dazed expression, he spoke.  “We’ve been searching for months though.  If his signal is still here in the Matrix, why can’t the Machines or Zion find him then?”

“When have they ever been able to? I’ve read the Zion reports on him. How he went missing before. I just don’t believe what they reported this time. I highly doubt the Merv could have caught him.”

She sighed with disappointment.  “Nothing in this area, we should go.”

Rays from the Sun pooled together leaving a bright glare on the satellite dish.  It was another hot day in the Richland district of Megacity. A young man typed away feverishly on a tiny computer by the dish.  He paused for a moment. “Ok I don’t get it, why Camon?  Why this signal booster.  The one in South Vauxton has a way better view.  Besides what the hell makes you think I can do this?  IT’S A SIGNAL BOOSTER! You think these things can be hacked?” he paused.

“Well maybe by some.”  He said glaring at the display on the data pad.  The monochrome screen displayed in green text.  Access denied.  You are not allowed to perform function.  Illegal command, please contact system administrator for further assistance.  His frustration clearly displayed in his eyes.

“Keep trying. He used to hang out here, a lot. You know, you need to believe in yourself more.  A wise man once said. “Our doubts are traitor, and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt.” She paused with a smirk on her face.

“By the way, I’ve been meaning to tell you, you’ve been doing a good job with the repairs to the ship.  I’m quite happy with how much you’ve fixed over the last couple of months.  When do you think you can get it flying?”

He typed away on the keyboard.  Without looking he replied.  “Thanks Cap, but if it wasn’t for your luck in finding a ship in the area ya did, I doubt I would be able to find parts.  Thankfully there is a tone of wreckage relatively close to the craft.  That is also an issue though… we still have to get the parts to the craft.  I’ve come up with a design of a hover cart I could build, but same problem exists… parts.  I was scouting last night, cause I couldn’t sleep… I found some parts that might work. First I’ll need to design a mechanical arm for moving the part cause unless you’re the Hulk. We won’t be able to life them.” He chuckled. ” But seriously I can do it, I’ll just need time.”

She rolled her eyes. “Well time is in short supply these days.  The longer we take god knows what could be happening to him.  I don’t want to jeopardize the quality of your work.  I realize the repairs could take a while.  I just… Don’t want them to.  I need to know he’s ok, or that he will be.  I owe a lot to him.”

Wondering over to the edge of the building she looked down on a gang of Slashers walking in the field.

She turned around to face him. “Do you have that signal booster hacked yet? I want to search the system logs and see if we can locate any traffic that might contain his code signature.”

“Hey, I’m trying my best here Capt. You think these are designed to be hacked.  The encryption on these boosters borders insanity.  The algorithms alone are … are…” he sighed with disappointment. “Impossible. I dunno if I can do this, these are secure lines. If I can then you’ll have access to the logs, and maybe we could also hook up that data pad to the booster, and see if we can increase the range.”  He typed away on the keyboard. “I think I might… yeah… wait for it…” His eyes filled with hope.

“Connect baby!” He shouted at the data pad. “I got it to acknowledge the data pad. Logs are being compiled… 50%... 60%... 70%...  It’s frozen… The data pad is crashing.  CRAP! I have to take this back to the lab, something is wrong with the compiling command when it tries to calculating the results… I think.”

“Fine, let’s jack out then.”  She said with a tone of defeat in her voice.

The sounds of key strokes echoed in the room.  A young man sat at the console typing away.  His goal, reprogram the code that would compile the system logs.  The clicking of keys slowed down until he stopped. He slowly lifted his head. “Why do you want to find him so bad?”

Her eyes watched the code trickle down the display.  “I don’t think he’s been K.I.A.  I don’t believe the Merv could have deleted him.  I know from the reports he and Zion suspected a Merv spy was following him.  There was even a virus planted on his ship according to one report.   I just… feel something is wrong… really wrong.  I wish I could track some of his old crew… maybe they would know more.  The report said Mirage and the crew went back to Zion.  Yet no one has seen them since the Resurgo docked.”

She paused a moment, the green light from the screen illuminated her face. Her eyes drifted to the chairs.  Memories replaced her thoughts.  “I… I owe… him my life as well.”

“Really?  What happened?” He asked as he waited for the program to compile and up load into the data pad.

“He freed me… took me back to Zion.” She watched the code slide its way down the screen. “I’d always know something wasn’t right about life, but I could never put my finger on it.  Something just didn’t feel real… as if I was in a … I dunno how to explain it.”  Pausing another moment lost in her thoughts.

“When I was a Bluepill my job allowed me to hear all sorts of stories.  At first it was hearing about people disappearing in phone booths.  Someone I worked with saw it actually happen.  From that day on I started to question what is possible… What my life meant? Why we’re here?  The desire to find out the truth grew over time. A couple of months later I ran into him.  We started talking about life.  He told me of how he understood how I felt that something wasn’t right, but I had to choose.  I had to make the choice to walk through the door, he was only a doorman. I told him I didn’t want to live a lie, and he offered me the pill. After I took it I felt as though I had been reborn.” Her voice trailed off. “Do you have that program compiled yet?”

“Nah Cap.  It will be a couple of hours.  I have to run a couple of tests on the datapad.”

“I’m going to rest then. Wake me up when it’s finished. I want to jack in and search again.”  She stood up and walked to her quarters.

“Ok Cap.” He watched her wander to her quarters.  He turned his attention to this monitor.  He waited a couple of minutes and then started typing furiously.  He accessed the captain’s files and found the classified report.  The report displayed on the screen.

### Incoming Transmission
### File Encrypted
### Classified File
### Attention All Zion Captains

We have just been notified by our informants that Denolus Captain of the Resurgo has been K.I.A.  Reports state that a Merovingian spy hacked a terminal in Zion and deleted his program.  We are currently investigating this matter.  The system logs show no unusual activity nor is there a record of his program being deleted.  We have sent message to the Resurgo and asked Mirage to return to Zion command where a full investigation will be launched.  We will be inspecting the server that Denolus lived on to see if we can track where the server was accessed from. Currently we have decided not to use the back up copy of Denolus program out of respect for him.  We are deeply saddened by this news and we wish the best to the Omega Syndicate for there loss.

### Tranmission End

“So is he really gone?”
he questioned quietly.

She exited the hardline her vision adjusted from reality to dream.  She looked up at the sky and smiled as the clouds trailed over head.  Before walking off she fixed her coat and then headed to the edge to the pier.  She watched for the local gang but the area was completely empty.  “Someone must have been looking for something”[/b] she thought.  She examined the area trying to locate someone.  In the distance a man sat on the edge of a pier drinking.  Slowly she started to walk to the man.

A tanned man sat on the dock his feet hanging over the edge.  His upper body swayed with the wind that was blowing.  He pretended to play an imaginary guitar.  He looked at her a moment before he began to sing. “Bring me back in shackles…Hang me long out in the sun…Exonerate me…Forget about... me… I recommend measures for ending it… Lover, she simply slammed the door… She said, "You're gonna miss me… Wait and you'll see… fuuuuuullllllllllyyyyy and completelllllllyyyyy!” He hiccupped again and took another drink of his beer, then fell over.  He laughed at himself. “WOOO TRAGICALLY HIP! I’m… drunk, ha ha.”  He shouted out loud.

He sat back up. “My life wasn’t always like this… I use to be a detective.” He slumped over to his right, then shot straight back up.  “He did it” He looked around glaring at all the roof tops.  He laughed.“They say he’s not real, but real is what they are not saying. Or are they… What is real? Am I real? Are you real?  How do you know reality when it’s all just a dream.  Or is it a dream? Is this a dream? What is dreaming? Nothing more then a passing moment in time.”  He laughed again.

He took another long drink. “This is all just a dream.  One day we are here, the next we are there. Here, there, here, there, where? Over there!“  He pointed to the downtown. “All those people running around, busy like rats, GET THE CHEESE, GET IT!”

She raised her left eyebrow as she looked at him.  “Been drinking a bit today, huh?” She tried to contain a smile.

He wobbled a moment, his chin hitting his chest. He paused for a moment, and in his current position he snapped his head towards the woman with a very serious look.  “Not only today” He whispered the next part “for a lot of days!” He let out a loud laughed.

“I’ve got a couple of questions for you; you said you were a cop, right?” She sat down beside him with knowledge of who the man was.

He looked alarmed. “How did you know? Who are you? What do you want?”

“You told me earlier, and let’s just say I’m a friend who believes you. I’m trying to find the man you use to track.”

“He’s a ghost”
He laughed “A ghost in the machine” he started laughing hysterically.

He continued laughing as she stood up.  “Well… I guess you really are what they said.” She stared to walk away.

He paused for a moment “what? Who said?”

“Some cops said you had lost it and some chick thought you might have be crazy.  She used to work with you.”

   “I’M NOT CRAZY!”
he shouted with anger.  “You want to know what I saw? YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I SAW!?  I saw a guy disappear into a telephone booth.  Saw him get shot and keep going like it was a mosquito bite.  I’m not crazy.  There is something wrong with that.  People can’t endure being shot that many times with an Uzi and just keep going. ”

“Hmmm.” She studied his face before continuing, “Seen him lately?”

   “What? Are you serious?”

   “Fully, Completely”

He looked shocked.  “Umm, well not really… a couple of months ago I saw him standing on a roof top around here. You, really believe me?”

Her tone of voice was quiet calmed when she spoke.  “Yes, why couldn’t something like that happen?  Some say anything is possible.  Sometimes our life is not what we perceive it to be.  Our perceptions can become distorted because of our past experiences.  Our perception about our lives is like a pair of glasses, sometimes the lenses get dirty and need to be cleaned.“ She paused a moment. “People don’t seem to understand you can clean those lenses. Sure you might have to work hard at it.  But isn’t it better to view life through clear glass.  Look, I won’t judge you for how you’ve dealt with this, Liam. I dunno how I would have dealt with seeing something like that, because we all react to things differently.” Her voice trailed off.

The sound of water crashed against the boats and piers in rhythm. She took a second before she spoke, giving him a moment to process what she had just said. “Look, we all make mistakes, but it’s how we deal with those mistakes that make us stronger, I guess it is just a matter of if you what you want to choose. Live in fear or not?”  She gave him a bottle of Vodka.  “Just remember, you always have a choice. I must get going, you know… if you want to know more about what you saw, you just let me know, but… you’ll need to clean up.  I refuse to work with you if you’re like this. If you choose to expand your mind let me know, it would be nice working together again.” she handed him a card, some coins and smiled at home. She turned around and walked to away.

He stared at the bottle of vodka then the card.  Then looked at the change in his hand then watched the young women drive away in the car.  He pocked the card and the money.  He went to unscrew the cap to the bottle but paused, then tilted his head in thought. “Again?”

The bluish-white glow of the hover engines illumined the ground. He maneuvered the hover cart around the debris to the aft of the craft. He smiled.  “And it only took 4 weeks to build this, I love hover technology. Capt, we can start loading heavy parts to the cart.  I’ll even be able to finish repairs on the ship.”

“Good work.  Now that the hydraulic jacks are in place on the ship we can find a couple of hover pads to replace the broken ones.  You said we needed four more right?” She hit a button on the rear bay door of the hovercraft.  The door hissed loudly as it closed slowly.

She turned away from the ship and pointed to some wreckage in the distance.  “Let’s try over there it looks like a couple of ships. That one on its side there looks like the engines are not broken. Maybe we can disconnect the pad.   You think that arm will work on the cart to lift it?”  Lightning stuck in the distance, but she didn’t hear the thunder.

“Yup Cap, we need four. As for the weight, I built it, so weight is of no concern.” He had a cocky smile.  “I was trying it out earlier when one of the land pads wasn’t resting correctly on the ground. I had to get a couple of hydraulics pistons of another ship and I transferred them on it.  Oh by the way, the landing gear should be working correctly. So… have you thought of name for the ship?”

“No” she replied as she stepped over some jagged metal parts on the ground. “I’ve been thinking of it, but nothing has come to mind, maybe once it’s able to fly I’ll be able to name him.”  Another red colored bolt struck the ground in the distance and still no thunder was heard.  “You know I was concerned when I first came out here.” Her eyes scanned the horizon.  “I… It was in my dream…” She paused a moment, lost in her own thoughts. “Wait a moment… this …. This landscape this is from my dream.” I giant smile came across her face. “Deja vu.”

He looked at her and in a sarcastic tone spoke.  “Maybe they changed something.”  He snickered.

“Look you… let’s just get to that ship.  You really think that hydraulic arm on that cart will lift those things?”

“For sure. I load tested it five times.”

“Alright, as long as it was tested. I don’t want either of us getting hurt.  It looks like there is storm coming we should hurry and at least get this parts to the craft.”
Lighting struck in the distance, but the red tinge to the bolt informed her that the storm was still a ways away.   It appeared to be moving slowly towards them. “We need to hurry if it’s going to be 2 trips.”

“Aye Capt.” He walked up to the wreckage of the hovercraft and started climbing to the hoverpad.  He inspected it.  “This looks like it will work.”

“Good let’s get this job done then, huh?”
she smiled as she started moving the robotic arm.

“You know what I don’t get, if he’s hiding, Why? I mean I know he didn’t want to fight, by why hide?  He can make it so they can’t locate his signal, and then he could change his look and just live in the city.”

“And yet you question him for hiding.”
She said with a grin.

“Yeah, I mean why exile your self from everyone.  I mean wouldn’t he get lonely at a point? I know I would.”

“Not if it was his choice, if the Merv is behind this, then we have some issues that need remedies. I doubt we could get him back if that French Fry has him.  Even if we did, how would we know his code hasn’t been hacked or altered?”

“So you really believe that he’s MIA?”

   “Yes”

“Based on … faith? And what you may or may not have seen”

“Yes. I’m telling you it was his code signature. Look I never told you.  I had a dream…  In this dream I was told something...  I know what I was told… sort of...”

“I just... I just don’t get it, how the hell do you manage to keep your faith this will all work out, I mean really! If there is something higher then us, then why did he… she… it… whatever let all this happen!”
He pointed around to the lifeless world around him. “HUH! WHY!? WE’RE BEING USED AS BATTERIES AND THERE IS NO PLANT LIFE! AND THE SKY IS BLACKENED TO A CRISP!  AND YOU HAVE FAITH THIS WILL GET BETTER!” He huffed and puffed heavily.

She breathed deeply and then slowly exhaled.  “Have I ever asked you to believe this? Or have I asked you just to accept this?” She grinned. “You know damn well that I’ve only ever asked you to accept this. As for how I’m able to keep my faith it is because I life will find a way.  How do you know that this is not some part of a bigger plan to make humanity to learn the value of life?  I certainly don’t know but it’s possible. All I know is to hope for the best.  Maybe by me thinking this way others might to, and in time maybe more, and then maybe if enough people to think it, well.” She looked around deep in thought. “Well, who knows what could happen, that’s why I keep my faith that things will get better. Now, let’s get this hoverpad on here, I want to jack in and see if I can find Denolus today. And remember one plus one is not always two.”

****** Mean while in the Matix ******[/i]

Liam stood on the bridge over looking the harbour.  In his left hand he held the bottle of vodka that women gave him a couple of weeks ago, he still had not opened it.  “Truth… what truth is there to learn, that life if messed up.  That I’ve seen something that might have been possible?  But how could someone just disappear like that? What if the government has some kind of super robots or something?” His thoughts were racing.

He looked at his bottle of vodka. Liam had not had a drink since the beer on the pier.  He was quite obsessed with what the woman had told him, there was only one other person who had ever believed him.  But he hadn’t seen her in years. 'Could it be?” he thought. “But she doesn’t look like her… well she kind of did… or was I just picturing that.” He rubbed his face. “Man, this all seems like a crazy talk… robots… but at the same time something isn’t right… I’ve always felt that way…  I keep expecting to wake up.'

He stared at the bottle of vodka and then looked up and smiled.  With all his might he wound up and throw the bottle of vodka, it seemed to twirl in the air slower then normal.  Right before it hit the water it seemed to stop for half a second, then it was gone into the abyss.

It had been a couple of days since she jacked in.  She was becoming frustrated and stressed out.  She sat up from her bed for a second, then grabbed the blanket and rolled it up.  Placing the blanket on the floor she knelt on it and sat on her feet.  She pulled her shoulders back to open up her lungs more and began to breathe deeply.  She exhaled slowly, and then drew a deep breath. Again she exhaled this time slower and deeper. Her breathing became rhythmic with the machine sounds that reverberated in the hovercraft. Her mind rested on one word, Faith.
