Operator.. Dial me into the Creston Heights north hardline...

I knew he'd be there, and I wasn't looking foward to the meeting. What happened six months ago was something I thought time would be able to clear from my mind.

Full combat load, emphasis on damage, and deterrance...

No one ever expected that I'd break free and return, but here I am, finally realizing that there are some things I never should have left behind. I slowly pull into an attack stance, and move along the wall of the building behind me as I clear the hardline almost expecting  an agent or two be on me the minute I start moving, but my place of refuge is oddly peaceful. I scan the area and for the time being, all is calm.

Incoming signal detected. Threat level unknown...

I look into the distance and see someone or something, moving near the fountain. As far as I can see, that something is the only thing in the area, and I move towards it and keep my fingers on the trigger, so to speak.
I look up at the person standing in front of me and find it hard to fight the edge of fear that is starting to push down on me. After all that I had been through because of him and his crazy mainframe runs he was a man I never wanted to see again, but when the master calls there's not much one can do to avoid him.

(Working on a bit of back story. More to come as I figure it out.)

Chapter 1- Sleep is for the weak...

There was a time that I thought that the only way to save myself and the rest of humanity was a return to the pods we came from, and to that end I spent time amongst the Cypherites, hoping that one day, I could go back to sleep, and forget about the hell that my life had become. The more I watched, and the more I fought for what I thought I wanted, the more I began to realize that what I thought I wanted was a dream that could never become real. Once I had come to the conclusion that my hopes for a return to my 'other' life were an illusion at best, I had become something of a mindless drone. It was at that time that I made contact with a person known to me only as the Man in Black... At first what he wanted from me seemed a simple thing, a few data files from one mainframe or another, or a few well placed attacks and viruses somewhere else, but as time went on, things started making less and less sense. I suppose at that point I should have walked away from what I was doing, but at that time I was just happy to have something to take my mind off the intense knots of emotional pain I was wrapped up in.

Voice 1: Sir, They know what I'm doing; they've been watching every move I've been making, and trying to stop me at every turn...

Voice 2: Don't worry, your current test subject is unusually good at what he does. You'll have the final results of the first run soon enough. I'm surprised this one has made it as far as he has.

Voice 1: We don't have much time left before the others find out what we're trying to do here. If what you say is true we need to increase the difficulty of the test patterns and finish recording the data as soon as possible...

Strange things can happen when you focus intently one one thing in your life to the exclusion of all others... There were times as this whole thing went on, that I could almost sense the voices of others floating in my mind, although whnat they were speaking of never made any sense. They spoke of tests and being watched and recording data, but for what? I had always assumed that what I was doing was was simply retrieving data for someone, and covering my tracks as best I could. The thought had never occurred to me that I may have become someone's guinea pig. As this realization had started to work its way into my numb mind, I began to feel a sense of unease creep in, and a feeling of icy anger had settled into the pit of my stomach. 'Alright Mister Man in Black,' i think to myself, 'if it's a game you want to play, I'm all for it.'

Pushed to my limits, and beyond by the strange activity I had been engaged in for the past two weeks or so, I began to notice subtle changes being made to my RSI. It was begining to look like I was less of myself, and more of someone or something else. As there were no negative side effects to these changes yet, I didn't think anything of it and merely assumed they were brought on by my constant state of high anxiety. I was still hearing faint whispers of voices every now and then, but that too, I dismissed as a result of stress. All of the sudden I heard my cell phone beeping. I looked down at it and saw a strange message  from someone I thought had been killed.

Hey Marauder...

If you want to get the monkeys off your back, maybe I can help you, but you have to trust me. I'll be in touch.

NightSinger

I stared at the text message for quite some time. 'NightSinger,' I thought to myself, ' who or what would be messing with me like that? I saw him get deleted months ago... No way he could be back, unless what I saw was an illusion.' I had worked with NightSinger a few times in the not too distant past, and I had come to think of the exile as the closest thing to a friend I had been able to find in my time as a Cypherite, and one of the few people I ever felt comfortable talking to. Anyway, I was of the opinion that stress and emotional trauma had begun to start playing tricks on my mind. Last I had seen my old friend we were both in a bit of a firefight with some agents over a few data files that we had managed to pull from an old machine outpost's mainframe. I was, as far as I knew the only one to make it out, and neither of us were able to hold onto the data files we were sent to find.

Chapter 2- A blast from the past

'Come on,' I said to myself, 'pull yourself together and focus. Either this is someone's idea of a nasty joke or your friend may still be around...' I heard my cell phone beeping again, and another text message from NightSinger had come through.

Hey...
Look for me behind a doorway that goes nowhere and come alone. There's something you and I need to see, but i've been told it's for us alone.

NightSinger

I looked at the text message and sighed. Whoever was sending these messages knew more about me than seemed right. NightSinger was dead as far as I knew, and to my knowledge exiles didn't leave ghosts behind either. I also didn't quite understand the message . What could someone mean by a door that goes nowhere. I let all that slip to the back of my mind as I placed a call to the Man in Black in reply to an email I had recieved an hour earlier. Another run... Another attack... Another piece of myself lost, and for what? I still don't know even as I look back on all of this just what was supposed to be happening to me or anyone else I had come in contact with in this whole mess.

'A doorway that goes nowhere? There are only two places that come to mind that fit that description, and the one that makes the most sense right now is the monument in the Rogers Way neighborhood of Westview,' I think to myself. An odd sort of place indeed... I usually go out that way for a bit of meditation, or to watch a sunset in hte evenings I'm not sure if I'd ever taken NightSinger up there. In any case these past few text messages from a dead man were begining to freak me out a bit. I looked for the nearest hardline to where I was at the time and dialed into Rogers Way Central and made my way to the Ascension monument . What I saw once I got to the top left me seriously shaken and somewhat scared. I looked around him, at him, and through him half expecting someone to jump out of the shadows, and tell me that this was all a trick, and that what I was seeing wasn't really there. It was NightSinger, and he was back somehow, although I wasn't sure if this was for real or just wishful thinking on my part.

'Ah... You're here at last. I know none of this makes any sense, but I'm the one that the Man in Black has sent you to find. It's my code that he's after, and I'm glad I found you first.'

As I stared at NightSinger and listened to what he was saying, I began to feel a conflicting set of emotions creeping into my already troubled mind. Part of me breathed a sigh of relief at seeing my friend after a long time of seperation, and the other part of me was trying to figure out whose idea of a sick twisted joke this was. It was true that NightSinger was a man of code rather than flesh and blood, but what secrets could his code hold within it? Why is it that the Man in Black would be fighting so hard for the code of an exile? I staggered backwards for a few steps and sat down hard when I fell.

'The secret is not what I am now, but what I could become with your help. When we first met I was hoping we could have had time to know each other a bit more, before that unfortunate encounter with those agents. It could have happened then, but there was neither time, or stillness.

I was at a loss for what to think. Whatever this was about now, I wasn't sure I wanted any part of. I slowly stumbled to my feet and backed away from NightSinger. I looked up at him again, still unsure of the next right thing to do.  What exactly was it that he was talking about?

Chapter 3- Confusion sets in

There's no reason for you to be scared at all. It was bound to happen sooner or later. The only problem is that you found out what was going on before the changes were complete. There is a reason for all of this... We were meant to be together in the truest sense. A fusion of human and exile...

When I was finally was able to grasp the full meaning of what NightSinger had been saying, it was as if the world I had lived in for so long suddenly ceased to have any meaning for me. Time stood still at that point as I begun to think of what that could possibly mean in the whole grand scheme of things.

The unease I felt when I first came up here slowly began to turn into a feeling of icy acid in the pit of my stomach. What purpose could there be in allowing him to become a part of me, and more worrysome, how much more of myself would I lose in the process? I was still looking around, and hoping to find someone that would tell me that this was all a joke, or some nightmare that I could wake up from.

We don't have a lot of time left, Marauder. You wanted a reason to keep living and I need a place to hide for a while. There's no need to keep running from who you were, and by protecting me you will find the pieces of yourself you thought you lost.

By this point in time I could have been easily taken down by anyone that walked by. My mind was racing faster than the speed of light to try and make sense of what was going on, and the adrenaline rush of fear was moving faster than I could.  I kept looking around nervously half expecting to be caught by agents, or worse. As I looked back at NightSinger, I noticed his code starting to flicker and was a bit confused as to what was going on.

I don't have much time left, Marauder... Just let me do what I need to do before I'm lost for good this time. You and I both know it's what's for the best. They know where we are and they're almost here... I need a place to hide for a while, and right now you're the only person I trust.

I looked up at NightSinger, and he looked back at me, and I knew then that his decision, was the right one. Neither one of us were safe alone, and without the blending neither one of us would be safe for long. As I looked up at him a second time I nodded to him. 'You're right,' I said in a nearly inaudible whisper,' there is no other way, and without this neither one of us has a chance...' As I spoke those last words NightSinger's image slowly faded away and I noticed that strange bursts of silver code started to ripple through my RSI.

Chapter 4- Freeze Frame

As I was slowly adapting to NightSinger's code while it poured into my RSI, it was as if I was seeing the world through a new set of eyes. Not only could I see the end result of what code made a building or any other structure within the system, I could almost, in a way, see through it and into its code in such a way that I could instantly find its weaknesses. As more and more of NightSinger's code became a part of me I began to get scared. I wasn't sure of what I was supposed to be doing with any of this code, and my fears began to come to the surface of my mind. 'Am I a weapon or a watcher now,' I thought to myself. In a further attempt to see what changes were being made, I switched into my attack programming and my antiviral defenses. What I saw there was equally confusing. Not only were the programs I used enhanced, but in some ways they were rebuilt to the point where it seemed as if I was being given the strength to take down anything that got in my way, from the weakest of the Merovingian's exiles, to the strongest of Agent Gray's minions.
